How blogs can be used in English language teaching can best be understand by looking at blog functions and characteristics first. We are doing this by taking the example of blogger.de:

writing articles (including text and pictures; files can be displayed as downloads)
uploading files (e.g. pictures, pdfs, ppts)
adding commentaries (text only)
starting polls (simple ones only)

characteristics
online (public & accessible from all over the world)
free of charge
quick registration
quick installation
easy to use
more than one person can be logged on at the same time
more than one person can add commentaries at the same time
authors are able to respond to commentaries (in text only)

restrictions
no text-editor > only basic text editing is possible; for changing the format & layout, for creating tables and for integrating hyperlinks basic knowledge of css and html are required
